About Our Adventure

We’re Rob and Susan—semi-retired empty nesters from North Carolina who traded routine for a one-way ticket to Portugal (and a whole lot of carry-ons).

Our path here wasn’t sudden. It started with U.S. road trips meant to help us figure out where we might want to retire. But then Rob was invited to give a keynote at the University of Lisbon. Around the same time, life reminded us that the window to chase big adventures isn’t open forever. That trip planted a seed.

There was no dramatic “let’s move to Europe” moment. It was more like a long, ongoing conversation built on what-ifs. Eventually, we realized the timing was right: our health was good, the kids didn’t need us (or want us hovering), and our parents were still independent. So we leaned in.

When we first arrived in Lisbon, our first impression was… a little gritty. But getting lost in the city cracked it open. The architecture, the rhythm, the history—it hooked us. We knew we’d be back. And we came back with luggage.

Rob’s the one who likes to go places and do nothing. Susan’s the one who finds alleyways, art, and cafes before breakfast. She’s the adventurer, always hunting for history and charm. He’s the laid-back one, always up for sitting still and soaking it in. Together, we push and pull each other toward balance.

We’ve learned that “home” isn’t a place—it’s the life we’ve built as a couple. Portugal gives us slower days, beautiful surroundings, and a lifestyle that feels like a long, contented vacation. But we don’t pretend it’s perfect or permanent. It’s where we are now, and that’s enough.

We’re not luxury travelers in the champagne-and-lobby-piano sense. But we do love boutique stays, Airbnb gems, and the occasional splurge that feels worth it. We travel with an eye for comfort, character, and value.
